Welcome Dr Mark Hooper!

Dr Hooper graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Science (Chiropractic) and a Bachelor of Chiropractic, having been awarded Honours for demonstrating a high level of academic achievement. Mark’s interest in chiropractic began when he met his wife, who is keenly interested in natural therapies. After some initial resistance, he agreed to visit a chiropractor and while he was initially sceptical, he was glad to experience good results. Since then he and his family have benefited from regular chiropractic care, having cultivated an interest in chiropractic in general and the place it has in a healthy family lifestyle. Dr Hooper is married to Jenni and they have three children.

All of us at Shelley Chiropractic Health Centre welcome Mark and wish him a good start! Dr Hooper will be working on Tuesday mornings.

Please call 93547307 to book an appointment with Mark.

Tibetan Acupressure

In addition to acupuncture and naturopathy, Ann Park is now providing Tibetan Acupressure-Compassionate Touch (TACT) on Tuesdays. TACT works with the entire body and all its physical and energetic systems.  The treatment awakens the body's natural healing energies and has a profound effect on mind and body.  As sessions are gentle anyone can benefit from its effects including babies and children, the elderly, pregnant and nursing woman.  Clients are seated and remain fully clothed for the treatment.

As an introduction to Tibetan Acupressure-Compassionate Touch, Ann is providing this deeply relaxing and meditative treatment at half price for your first consultation, $42.50.

If you would like to make an appointment or would like further information, please contact Cara, Kim or Kat on the front desk at 9354 7307.

Do You Know Your Biological Age?

As chiropractors, Dr Chan and I often discuss or are asked about supplementation.  Although it is not necessary for everyone, nutritional supplementation can greatly affect wellness and recovery from illness or dysfunction.  In our practice, we most commonly prescribe natural anti-inflammatories (such as fish oils), joint formulas (glucosamine) and muscle complexes (magnesium).

At the clinic we stock almost exclusively the Metagenics line of supplements.  It is a Practitioner Only brand which means that it is sold exclusively through clinics where the product has been prescribed by a health care provider with knowledge of nutritional medicine.  Metagenics products are rigorously tested for quality and efficacy.  This is so important.

I'm often asked why one should purchase a Metagenics product versus a grocery store supplement.  You get what you pay for and the quality of the Metagenics products is top-notch.  Metagenics is also concerned about how and where they source their ingredients and research is paramount in the development of their products.

Metagenics has a great website to provide detailed information about all their products.  In addition, they have some great health questionnaires on Healthy Ageing and  General Health.  If you want to do a questionnaire, the practitioner number is 48692.  The results are forwarded to the clinic and we can discuss them with you in detail.  If you've ever wanted to know your Biological Age....try the Healthy Ageing questionnaire.  It can let you know if you are on the right track or what areas of your lifestyle need attention.

If you have any questions about supplementation, please do not hesitate to ask.  We'd love to talk to you about it.

Cara
Alix
We warmly welcome Cara and Alix to the team at Shelley Chiropractic Health Centre.  As we have gotten busier, Dr Chan and I have felt the need to hire some staff to help us with administrative side of the practice.  This is great news to you as a patient: easier access to appointments, faster response to telephone calls and a friendly face on arrival.  Cara is a local resident and she, along with her family, is a long term patient.  Alix is a 4th-year Chiropractic student at Murdoch University.  Alix and Cara both look forward to meeting all the wonderful patients that we have at the clinic.

In addition to Cara and Alix, we have implemented a new computerized scheduling system.  If your contact details have changed in the recent past, please let us know.

A Message From Dr. Susan Falk

To My Valued Patients:

After much consideration, my husband and I have decided to relocate to Margaret River.  I would like to thank you all for your support and I have thoroughly enjoyed treating you and, for many of you, introducing you to the benefits of ongoing chiropractic care.

I will eventually be starting up my own practice in Margaret River, so if any of you are down that way, be sure to look me up!  I will always welcome a familiar smile.  Also, if you know anyone in the area that you feel could benefit from my care, please let them know.  I will forward on my clinic information to Dr. Young once set up.

I hope each of you will continue your chiropractic care with either Dr. Victoria Young or Dr. Susanna Chan here at Shelley Chiropractic.

I wish you all the best and would like to thank Dr. Young for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of a great community here at Shelley.  You will all be missed.

Sincerely,

Dr. J Susan Pausin (nee Falk)

Dr. Falk's last day of practice at Shelley Chiropractic is on Friday February 25th, 2011.

To Crack or Not to Crack??

For those patients that receive manual adjustments, we’d like to discuss something that has significant bearing on all manual chiropractic practices – the crack! The cracking noise associated with manual adjustments (or cavitation, as it is properly termed) is something that is perceived as a required outcome for most patients. People regularly ask “Did that go?” or “Did that work?” if they don’t hear a cavitation following and adjustment.

A new study in JMPT found that an audible cavitation was not necessary in order to experience the benefits of the adjustment. The authors measured 2 different variables associated with pain relief, and found that the adjustment reduced pain equally regardless of whether there was an audible cavitation or not.

So, it is the actual mechanism of the adjustment, the high velocity low amplitude thrust, that results in pain relief. Whether or not it creates an audible cavitation means nothing.

Dr. Susan Falk is getting married!

Please help us in congratulating Susan for her recent engagement and upcoming nuptials. As would be expected, she'll be taking some time off before and following her wedding. Dr. Falk will be away from Monday, July 5th-16th. Dr. Susanna Chan will be available to care for Susan's patients during this time. Best wishes to Susan and her fiance, Matt.

Dr. Susan Falk is getting married!

Friday, April 16, 2010

Please help me welcome Dr. Susanna Chan to the clinic. She will be taking over the care of Dr. Young's patients when Victoria goes on maternity leave May 6th.

Dr. Susanna Chan graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Science (Chiropractic) and a Bachelor of Chiropractic. Prior to becoming a chiropractor, Susanna suffered from chronic neck pain due to an injury in her early teens. Having been introduced to Chiropractic at a young age, she herself has since experienced the many benefits of Chiropractic care, and is passionate in helping others achieve their optimum health potential.

Susanna is a local resident and has spent a large part of her life growing up in the Shelley/Rossmoyne area. She has practiced various styles of dance, as well as having learnt a number of musical instruments. In her spare time, Susanna enjoys playing the piano and keeps up a regular practice of “hot yoga” to stay fit and healthy, in body and mind.

Dr. Chan offers low force, as well as traditional manual adjusting techniques and soft tissue therapies to suit patient preferences and individual needs. She looks forward to meeting and working with you on your journey to health, prevention, and wellness!

Knee Pain? Look to the Hip!

Anytime someone comes into Shelley Chiropractic with knee pain, I always will look at their hips and pelvis for dysfunction. It is a logical step that most chiropractors will take.

Now, new research is emerging which is showing that a measurable relationship does exist between patellofemoral joint (kneecap) pain and altered hip mechanics.

This study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found a link between women with kneecap pain, increased internal hip rotation and weakness with hip extension. These subjects consistently showed weaker single leg squatting and jumping abilities, and had improper hip mechanics when running.

A comprehensive treatment strategy would involve normalizing the hip and pelvic function with chiropractic adjustments, working on the muscular tension with soft tissue therapy, and addressing the hip weakness with a gluteus medius and maximus rehab program.

The incidence of knee pain is very high in our society, especially in younger women. There are ways to help this condition, and it is not necessarily something you have to live with!

Preventing Back Pain in Adults

Back pain is a huge problem in our society. It affects over 80% of people at least once in their lives, and can lead to high costs in terms of diagnostic testing/imaging, treatment, medication, decreased productivity and time off work.

A systematic review was recently done in The Spine Journal to evaluate which methods were best for preventing back pain in adults. They evaluated studies including exercises, advice, back supports and other props, activity modification or social/workplace policy changes.

What they found is that the only intervention that consistently showed good results in preventing the occurrence of back pain was exercise. This reinforces the general tenet that you must get your back in motion for it to be healthier.

A simple, but consistent exercise plan is a vital component to healing existing back problems, and more importantly to stop them from recurring. Exercise, whether general aerobic or specific strengthening/mobilizing should be part of every patient’s plan of manangement.
